I love the beauty, character and occasional silliness that animals display, which helps inspire my artwork. I was born and raised in Powell River, B.C. Canada, however, while visiting Nova Scotia in 2010, I fell in love with the Maritimes and decided to move in 2013. My artistic pursuits were put on hold for a short time after I moved but I was able to rediscover the love I had for my artwork after moving with my husband to a new house where I could have a dedicated space for an art studio. I work with graphite pencils, erasers, and some sculpting tools for indenting in the beginning stages of my work. Once the piece I'm working on reaches a point that I'm happy with, I start working over the pencil in fine tip pen to add contrast and darker values to the drawing. I work using both pencil and fine tip pen until the piece is complete. I have worked in coloured pencil, acrylics, oils, watercolours, and pastels before, and while all of these mediums are beautiful to work with, drawing was always my first love. I always feel like I'm "coming home" when I start a new drawing, and I feel like this shines through in my work. There are so many different mediums and choices for artists, and while it is fun to experiment, I feel everyone has something that they connect with, and drawing happens to be mine. I’m Kaitlin, I’m a maritime based artist and illustrator working in Nova Scotia. After falling in love with the east coast during my first visit in 2010, I decided to move in 2013. I was born and raised in Powell River, BC, which shaped who I am as an artist today. Growing up on the western side of Canada offered an abundance of inspiration, as coastal mainland British Columbia is home to an incredible arts and cultural community as well as some of the world’s most breathtaking coastlines, diverse forests and of course, plenty of wildlife! Art has always been a focal point in my life. Summers spent camping, hiking and fishing, fueled my love of nature and countless back yard sightings of black bears, deer, rabbits, racoons and eagles inspired my artwork from a very young age. Lately I have been creating colourful illustrations and bringing them to life in the form of mixed media collage, such as the piece you see to the left: “Ghost of the Dawn” I am self-taught, so every piece of art you see is evidence of years of experimentation, practice, trial and error, success and failure. I started out drawing when I was young and gradually moved into painting as time went on. I now use a little bit of everything in my work as I find the variety in colour and texture produces some very dynamic and beautiful results. The thing I love most, and the thing I try to convey in my artwork is the spirit of each animal. If you have pets you know they are instinctual by nature, however some of our deepest and most genuine connections are the ones we have with these creatures that inhabit our homes and our hearts.
